Exterior Tent Lighting

Exterior Tent Lighting
It's the Fourth of July this weekend and we are doing something a little unusual.

One of our local cities is having a 4th celebration  and this is a prototype of a signature event this city wants to hold next year. This event takes place in their local historical park. The client requested something special.

So in addition to having red, white, and blue bunting fans and traditional draping of the tent in red, white, and blue, we are also decorating the outside of the tent top. To accomplish this we are lighting the top of the tent in red and blue stripes using pinspots with  gels. And we are then adding a layer of stars by using a leko and a gobo of a star pattern.  The stars will completely fill the top of the tent  and should give a stunning display as the fireworks go off.

I'll post pictures next week.
Happy Fourth.

LEDs

LEDs, LEDs, LEDs... it seems that is all we hear lately. Yet for those of us in the lighting business this is a chorus we have heard for the last 10 years. LEDs are not new on the scene, but their popularity and increased function are somewhat new. Pricing has come down and technology has improved. LEDs are now a legitimate tool for lighting certain events.

But before we all go hopping down the lane, LEDs are not the end all new light source. There are distinct benefits with these units - yet there are still drawbacks.

LEDs do draw less power, they do have an extremely long  life, they can provide color by way of RGB protocol, and they produce relatively little heat. So it is possible to light a tent on one 15 amp circuit.

Yet LEDs still have a limited throw, they have a narrow beam angle,  LEDs serve as great decor lights and can light smaller tents and they can produce beautiful and easy color change. But on larger tents they still lack the capability to provide enough ambient light on their own.

A combination of LEDs and conventional lighting can create wonderful effects.

Take a look at the OPTI LED, the Elar TrI LED, and the Xband. These are excellent lights and are becoming somewhat affordable. I have lit a 40 wide tent with the Xbands by Acclaim. I like this light.
