color trends

While color trends in events may not be as critical as in fashion, they still affect a customers choice in linens, lighting and accessories and as such should be anticipated with a degree of certainty. Color makes a statement and sets the tone for the event.

One needs only to watch such as events as the Oscar's to get a hint of color tendencies. This year was full of red dresses, purses, bright red lipstick, and red shoes. There were also smatterings of other bold colors in tones of purple and deep yellow.

According to pantone.com "honeysuckle" is the color of the year for 2011. Honeysuckle is a deep pink like flamingo pink.

It is my opinion we are seeing a resurgence of deep blog tones but not overly flash, deep blues, and rich yellows.

We are also seeing the effect of the "greening" of America with tones of green both subtle and bright and tones of natural brown. Last years colors of chocolate and turquoise are still hanging around.

One must also recognize the "texture" of events. Just look at a color wheel, "analogous" colors are the shades on either side of the original choice color. These make great accents such as napkins and chair ties.Complimentary colors are the colors opposite on a color wheel and they make the original color "pop"!

While there are no set laws you must have a sense of color to help your client enhance their event.

Study magazines such as Elle, Cosmo, and Modern Bride and study upscale displays in Macy's and Niemann Marcus and search out design pages and blogs.

Have fun with color.
